Football’s future, past converge in The Woodlands this weekend

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Whether you’re a fan of Houston football, or you play the game at a high school somewhere in Houston, Legends Sports Complex in The Woodlands would be a good place to be Saturday and Sunday.

This weekend is National Athletic Combine’s first-ever event in the Greater Houston area. NAC will take its high-tech instruments, big-name coaches and the technicians and coaches who operate things to the venue, a 100,000 square-foot facility at 602 Pruitt Road in The Woodlands (77380).

Among the former Oilers who’ll be on hand will be former QB Dan Pastorini, offensive linemen Carl Mauck and David Carter, and defensive coordinator John Paul Young, who is among the directors of NAC. There also might be an appearance by legendary Oilers head coach Bum Phillips.

Sign-in starts at 7 a.m. both days, and it’s expected that over 100 young men, made up of mostly of rising sophomores, juniors and seniors, will be taking part in the reps, the runs, the jumps and the drills. The action starts at 8 a.m. and will wrap up mid-afternoon, probably before 4 p.m.

Parents are welcome to accompany their sons to the event, but are encouraged to bring lawn chairs as seating is limited. There will also be presentations by Scott Pucek of Xplosive Speed, who trains NFL Draft prospects at the Athletes Performance facility in Frisco; and Segun Adebayo, who will head the inaugural One Play Away O-Line vs. D-Line Camp for linemen this summer at DeKaney High School, 22351 Imperial Valley Dr. (77073), from June 9-11.

Closing in on Houston

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

National Athletic Combine is finishing up the final details for its first-ever Houston-area combine later this month.

The Texas Gulf Coast Region combine, the last of the season, is slated for April 24-25 at Legends Sports Complex at 602 Pruitt Road in The Woodlands (77380). The venue boasts over 100,000 square feet of fields, courts, training rooms and sports facilities.

While the selection process hasn’t started yet, it’s expected that over 200 student-athletes will participate in the two-day event. High school coaches from around the Bayou City will be contacted starting next week and are encouraged to quickly get their notifications in.

“We’re excited to come to Houston, one of the richest cities in America for high school football talent,” said John Owen, one of the NAC’s directors. “We think we can find some of the diamonds in the rough as well as showing off the talent of several marquee players from Houston.”

Onward to Austin

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

National Athletic Combine is ready to have its first event in over a month April 11 in Austin.

The next NAC event will be at the Travis County Expo Center, 7311 Decker Lane. The pre-registration deadline is a week from Friday, April 9, and 250 athletes have been invited so far. We’re expecting about a third of them for our next combine.

Check-in will be at 7 a.m., and the day should wrap up by 4 p.m. We’ll have highlights from the combine on our Facebook page and will have top-five performances (by drill) on our Web site soon after its completion.

Following the Austin event, we’re finalizing preparations for our next combine in Northwest Houston. Nothing’s official yet, but we’re expecting it to take place on the second-to-last weekend of April. Stay tuned.
